The cast may be delightful and the musical sequences shine, but after three go-rounds, the premise is played out. Many of the funny lines feel forced and the whole film seems like it&amp#39s trying too hard. The success of the first two movies means this final installment enjoyed a bigger budget, evidenced by glamorous European settings and the yacht explosion, but it&amp#39s all overkill for a story centered on the joy of music and the bonds of female friendship.

Is a teen movie with gay themes that maximises its underlying sexual tension while minimising its potential for exploitation and, when the opportunity for exploitation arises, it timidly backs away from it.. If the characters have entirely different dispositions towards one another from scene to scene, that can be at least partially attributed to the eternally malleable nature of teenagers, and the feelings that they fight within themselves. When it actually feels like something is developing, however, dire

: hammers this heavily, between Theo’s “Twas the night before Christmas..” riff to Hans’ “It’s Christmas, Theo, it’s the time of miracles…,” and many others. The best is probably Hans dryly reading McClane’s famous taunt: “Now I have a machine gun, ho-ho-ho…” a line that perfectly capture the genre mashup. 

That’s the film’s M.O. It will take a moment or a character dynamic (or a Dave Matthews Band song), wring it for comedy and then return to it later to twist it into something subtly devastating. But would it not have been more interesting if Ben Affleck had directed Batman v Superman, rather than starred in it?
